Well the circle is on the spot - Nearest metro is Goncourt but Belleville is convenient too.
La Java is at the end of an arcade, there is a big sign out front and on the north corner of the arcade a cafe with lots of men smoking water pipes and drinking pretty good coffee.
You go down to the end of the arcade and then down the stairs and you are in another world.
That of a genuine 1930's dance hall where once upon a time Jean Gabin would trip the light fantastic with Edith Piaf. The man behind the bar is Christophe who with his father Jacques has been running the place for decades.
Ghosts abound !

If you are coming by taxi from the south side of Republique get the taxi to drop you off on the corner of rue St. Maur and Faubourg du Temple, it will save you going all the way 'round the block and some money as well.
