A Richard Thompson concert in Paris is always a special event with or without his band.
This year he comes back for the sixth time since the first show I promited with him in Les Etoiles
back in February 2003. No-one there that night will forget that extraordianary evening.
Since then he's performed in the Cabaret Sauvage with band, La Java for a hot and sweaty solo show, New Morning solo and then the Trabendo with band in 2007 the night that England played France in the rugby world cup semi final. There were some torn loyalties that night.
This year he's back with full band hot on the heels of the release of a great new album Dream Attic.

Playing a full two set show you can expect to hear plenty of firm favorites as well as his latest work, some highly electric guitar fireworks, some tasteful acoustic virtuosity,
as always accompanied by remarkable musicians plus a fair share of dry humour.
All this in the heart of Paris on a sunday night.

Just for the anecdote Richard always seems to come to Paris shortly after Hugh Cornwell has played here.
Before Fairport Convention and the Stranglers they were both in their first group
Emil and the Detectives down Guildford way. Last year when Hugh was in Los Angeles he got to play with Richard again for the first time in what must be 45 years or so. Check out.

thank you for organising another great concert (RT on Sunday evening). We've been there for the last 3 and have been bowled over every time. The last 3 songs of the first set along with that unbelievable solo had me and the my missus (58 and 59 respectively) on the edge of our seats literally gasping with the sheer emotion of it all. What a great powerful and sensitive performer/artist. And what a fantastic invention is the fender strat - it seemed positively alive, exploding, sparkling with endless possibilities...phew! If it had got any better, it would have been unbearable! Thanks again.

with a rugby world cup semi final bewteen France and England RT had a little competition for his second full band show in Paris.
He was still on stage long after the final whistle had been blown, up the road in the Stade de France.
England 14 - France 9.
80 minutes on the pitch or 130 on stage?
It was another extraordinary performance by Richard and his team,
Danny Thompson so solid and fluid on his undersized double bass locking in to Michael Jerome's powerful Gretsch drum kit and there stage right was Peter Zorn with his copious array of instruments all of which he mastered perfectly.
And Diana Jones who opened the proceedings with an all too brief set that won her many admirers.

Set list which was more or less adhered to I think

Rock.

Audience eye views

With RT listening to French music during the making of Front Parlour Ballads, Paris seemed a good place to hear some of it live for the first time, but then who needs an excuse to spend time in Paris? Others had travelled further for this concert, including two brothers from San Luis Obispo. The Java club is one of those sweaty basement clubs steeped in musical history, and there was a tension in the waiting queue for entry as the start was delayed. My thanks go to Richard Condon for saving a seat for me, and to Simon Tassano for the great quality of the sound.

The performance itself was consistently outstanding throughout the set, with a momentum that never flagged. This was a very attentive and passionate audience, which earned a very rewarding musical response from Richard. When the notes of Satie quietly reverberated around the room at the end of Valerio, there was absolute silence in the audience. A short silence followed the last damped note, followed by an almighty roar. The setlist tailored for this occasion made it quite unlike any RT concert I've attended before. Thanks must go to Karel Beer for arranging a very special evening in such a great artistic city. Six posters signed by Richard will shortly be available for auction.

Indeed it was a fine night, that Dickie Thompson; this is a short note to show my immense appreciation.

Here is as a present the text I wrote about the Richard Thompson show  , I offer it to you as my way to thank you for making this evening possible ……….

De "Genesis Hall " à "Dimming of the Day"
La Java, les Etoiles ,le Cabaret Sauvage
Merci à toi Richard , à Paris, à jamais ………..

Pierre Lecomte ( alias Carpe Diem )

Richard Thompson: The Old Kit Bag reviewed by David Peschek for The Guardian

Subtitled Unguents, Fig Leaves and Tourniquets for the Soul, Richard Thompson's first new record in almost four years turns inward, away from the critiques of parochial Englishness found on predecessor Mock Tudor.
Or at least it seems to. Thompson remains a true English original: no one else could have written these dense, flinty songs, and, unlike Elvis Costello, he never lets the technique overpower the text.
The arrangements are simple and clean, and the band (including brilliant double bassist Danny Thompson) perform with perfect neatness behind that sinewy voice and articulate guitar-playing. First Breath succeeds in being both sensual and ominous as Thompson warps the melody around what is half-tango, half-lullaby. He is as sharp a chronicler of the vicissitudes of love (and other dilemmas) as he ever was.
